Abstract

Amoebic disease is the third most common parasitic cause of death all over the world although since the introduction of effective medical treatment and rapid diagnosis, mortality rates have fallen to 1–3% [1]. Thus, Entamoeba histolytica (EH) infection continues to be a significant worldwide health problem. In industrialised countries, amoebiasis occurs sporadically in travellers who have returned from endemic areas, immigrants, residents of penal and mental institutions, and in male homosexuals.
