Abstract

Lamellar ichthyosis (LI) is a rare congenital disease that can affect the patient’s quality of life because of its appearance. It is characterized by large, brown, polygonal, plate-like scales over the skin. The incidence of LI is around 1 in every 140,000–300,000 populations. Patients with LI are typically born as collodion babies, which is a parchment-like membrane covering the whole body, and will shed upon the first few weeks of life to show the disease beneath. Here we present a 2-year-old boy with lamellar ichthyosis born as a collodion baby. From the physical examination, there were scarring alopecia on the scalp, crumpled on the left ear, madarosis, eclabium, ectropion and there were also large, brown, polygonal scales over the entire body with plate-like appearance. The mainstay skin treatment for all types of ichthyoses is an emollient to keep the skin moisturized.KeywordsCollodion babyIchthyosisLamellar ichthyosisCongenital ichthyosisAutosomal recessive congenital ichthyosisIchthyosis vulgarisEmollient treatmentGenetic diseases
