Abstract

A 44-year-old man submitted for enlarged thyroid gland. Fine needle aspiration cytology showed bizarre hyperchromatic nuclei and medullary carcinoma was suspected. Thyroidectomy was done and frozen slides revealed hyperplastic thyroid follicles with bizarre nuclei with perithyroidal extension. The frozen diagnosis was malignant neoplasm with extrathyroidal extension. But, permanent sections of thyroidectomy showed diffuse hyperplasia of thyroid glands showing fibrous septa and bizarre nuclei of follicular epithelial cells. I will discuss about the diagnostic pitfalls of this case.
