Abstract

A case of right breast cancer associated with von Recklinghausen's disease is reported. A 59-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of a right breast tumor which had been noticed five years previously. The tumor was 9.7×8.4cm in size. Multiple neurofibromas and cafe au lait spots were noticed on the entire skin surface. After histological examination by Surecut biopsy, phyllodes tumor of the breast was diagnosed and a simple mastectomy was done on July 12, 1995. Histologically, the tumor was invasive ductal carcinoma with neuroendocrine features. Von Recklinghausen's disease is often associated with neurogenic malignant tumors. However, its correlations with epithelial malignant tumors have not been clarified. To our knowledge 27 cases of breast cancer with von Recklinghausen's disease have been reported in the Japanese literature. They are commonly in an advanced stage. Accordingly, when we encounter von Recklinghausen's disease, systemic and careful examinations must be performed.
