Abstract

This paper presents a case of breast cancer with ossiferous and cartilaginous metaplasia, together with a review of 33 cases seen in the Japanese literature. A 43-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of a left breast tumor. At the first visit a 25×20mm tumor was palpated in the A region of the left breast. With needle aspiration biopsy a diagnosis of breast cancer (T2aNOMO in Stage II) associating with ossiferous and cartilaginous metaplasia was made. Radical mastectomy was performed. Histopathologically the tumor was comprised of epithelial areas consisting of mainly ductal formation, and mesenchymal areas where chondrification was pominent; and these areas coexisted closely. Moreover, cartilaginous and osteoid tissues consisting of atypical cells were observed in the entire tumor. Immunohistological examinations revealed that keratin and epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) were positive for the epithelial components and a part of giant cells.
