Abstract

Safety ensuring is always priority for design, construction and operation of engineering structures. One of required elements of construction is land use engineering that includes such activities as grading, levelling, drainage provision, control of karst, landslide and debris flow processes, etc. The lowest cost and the highest rate of construction are usually priority for construction owners. These conditions are possible in the cases of low slopes, seismic stability, well-drained soils, absence of hazardous exogenous processes in the territory, etc. However such situations are quite rare. Therefore land use engineering is necessary very often. The authors discuss aspects of land use engineering by the example of designing an areal object of a gas transportation system in the region of the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus. Many of the land use engineering measures are connected with transformation of the surface relief and geomorphological conditions of the investigated territory, for example: - slope terracing; - installation of gabion structures for stabilization of slopes; - construction of an upland drainage ditch; - organization of a storm-water drainage system. These design decisions will provide safety of the considered object during its construction and operation.
