Abstract

The instrument described was designed to sample particulate matter in town air, and to spread the sample over an area of about 15 × 14 mm on two standard microscope slides so as to give a thin deposit suitable for optical assessment by reflected and transmitted light. Deposition is by impaction, using the third and fourth stages of a standard Casella cascade impactor, so that the particles collected are mainly in the size-range from about 0.6–2.5 μm; larger particles are collected in the earlier stages up-stream but are not spread out, and smaller particles can be collected by filter downstream.
