Abstract

Incubation of lanost-8-en-3β-ol with a rat liver microsomal acetone powder preparation fortified with various cofactors results in a smooth conversion to cholesterol. Omission of NAD + from the same incubation mixture results in an inhibition of cholesterol synthesis and accumulation of a carboxylic acid. This acid has been characterised as δ 7 or δ 8-3 β-hydroxy-4 β-methyl-5 α-cholestene-4 α-carboxylic acid.
