Abstract
The Penman - Monteith (PM) equation is widely accepted as a tool for transpiration estimates using standard meteorological data. The weak point of this approach is estimation of the surface (canopy) resistances ( r c ), in PM equation. This contribution presents a method of r c estimate based on the experimentally verified relations between r c and soil water potential (SWP) of the root zone. Well known relationship between r c r a and relative transpiration E E o is used, based on Penman and PM equations for potential and actual transpiration, respectively. Aerodynamic resistance can be estimated independently by the standard method. The van Genuchten's type of equation is used to express relationship E E o = f (SWP) . Coefficients of this equation depend on soil properties. The above mentioned approach enables calculation of r c using standard meteorological data and SWP of soil root layer during the period concerned. As a result, r c as a function of SWP is estimated.
