Abstract

A Boltzmann treatment is used to obtain the thermopower at low temperatures of a quasi-1D wire. The subband structure is found to give rise to large positive thermopower for Fermi energies near subband minima, and the structure should remain observable for temperatures below about 10 K. Lifetime broadening is investigated, and the 1D density of states is shown to have a marked variation with energy for (kFl)10 ∼ > 5.
