Abstract

The age and fast effect for fission neutrons in Be and BeO have been obtained from a multi-group solution of the moments equations. Recent nuclear data, including that known for the 9Be(n, 2n) reaction have been incorporated. All neutron degradation processes have been described exactly within the framework of multigroup theory, including energy—angle correlations. The analysis has shown that the age and fast effect are not strongly dependent upon either the secondary neutron spectra from the 9Be(n, 2n) reaction, nor its large anisotropy in the laboratory system. Significant uncertainties in the nuclear data still remain; however, these uncertainties do not seem capable of explaining the persisting difference of 12 per cent between calculated and measured ages in Be.
