Abstract

To date, many researchers have investigated the use of a shaving cutter for finishing a cylindrical gear with an involute tooth profile. They did not require a calculation method of the cutting-edge profile of the conventional shaving cutter, because it has a crossed helical gear profile. However, it is difficult to calculate the cutting-edge profile of a plunge-cut shaving cutter. In this report, a new calculation method of the cutting-edge profile of a shaving cutter for finishing the helical gear with an arbitrary tooth profile is proposed, which is not only applicable to the conventional cutter, but also to the plunge-cut shaving cutter. As a numerical example, the cutting-edge profile of the cutter which can produce the helical gear with the involute or the cycloid tooth profile is calculated, and a change in the surface of the plunge-cut cutter is shown by means of a contour map.
