Abstract

An endogenous nuclease is found in purified Xenopus erythrocyte nuclei. This enzyme is activated specifically by Ca 2+ in the presence of which chromatin is digested into discrete fragments. Both 10 bp and 200 bp ladders are detected upon electrophoresis of DNA. This endogenous enzyme therefore resembles mammalian and chicken liver endonucleases.
