Abstract

An interactive computer-assisted learning program to teach the principles of the laboratory determination of red blood cell indices and blood group is described. The program, which is written for the BBC microcomputer, makes extensive use of colour, graphics, and animation and is aimed at students of biology at A-level and above. Included in the program are simulations of haemocytometry (red blood cell count), spectrophotometry (haemoglobin concentration), determination of packed cell volume and blood group. Students select from a menu either to review the principles of the method (text supported by graphics) or to ‘perform tests’ on a subject of their choice (selected from normal male, normal female, anaemic, or unknown) and produce a haematological profile.
