Abstract
This article describes the development and evaluation of a computer-aided-learning (CAL) program called ZOOPHYL. The CAL program was used in a first-year university level course in invertebrate zoology. It deals with the classification, biology and morphology of ten major invertebrate phyla. For each phylum, students must complete 16 ‘fill-in’ screens which are identified as themes. Each screen specifies important characteristics of each phylum, which can be compared and contrasted with the others. Approximately ten hours of instructional materials were produced to operate on PCs running under DOS. The program is described from a technical, educational and structural viewpoint. Usage and evaluation procedures and outcomes are summarized. Plans for the future are enumerated.
