Abstract

In this paper we propose two image compression algorithms that involve hybrid schemes. We make use of the absolute moment block truncation coding (AMBTC) and adaptive AMBTC in discrete wavelet transform (DWT) domain. The standard image is subjected to wavelet decomposition into its approximations and details. The details which represents finer details of the image is discarded and the approximation coefficient is coded using AMBTC in the first scheme. The second scheme uses an adaptive method of determining the block size in AMBTC. Both the algorithms achieve a high compression factor of 16:1 and a bit rate as low as 0.5 bit/pixel with acceptable image quality. Further it is shown that the proposed algorithms yield results which are superior with those achieved with more complex algorithms.
