Abstract

An amplifier-type active microstrip antenna, as a transmitting antenna, consisting of a passive broadband slotted triangular microstrip antenna and a coplanar amplifier circuitry for enhanced gain and bandwidth, is demonstrated. The active microstrip antenna studied here is printed on an inexpensive FR4 substrate (relative permittivity 4.4, thickness 1.6 mm), and shows an extra output gain of 6 dB and a 9.3% bandwidth in the 1.8 GHz band, which is about two times that of the passive broadband slotted triagular microstrip antenna or six times that of the passive conventional unslotted triangular microstrip antenna. Details of the antenna design and experimental results are presented. ©1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 22: 387–389, 1999
