Abstract

Abstract Cold spray coating process is one of the most promising surface coating technologies because of its unique features. In cold spray process, the heat affected zone will not form due to very low heat input and the residual compressive stresses will form instead of tensile stresses. Because of these features, the cold spray process exhibits high deposition efficiency, and good coating bond strength. The powder microstructure and properties will also remain same even after deposition of coating. Thin (microns level) and thick (centi meters level) coatings can be obtained using this process and porosity level is less than 1% porosity because of no oxide formation. This is the main reason to use cold spray process for structural and corrosive repairs of critical components where welding is not possible. Variety of materials like metals, composites, ceramics and even polymers can be deposited by cold spray process. From past ten years, the significant research work has been in progress both industrial and academia side and still there is a lot of scope for future research on this process. This paper gives an overall view of cold spray coating process including its significance, working principle and applications.
