Abstract

A half-hour structured play interview was conducted with 29 3-year-olds who were participating in a longitudinal study of normal infant development. Ratings of concentration and peer aggression derived from doll play, and behavior ratings of the child's ability to separate and his or her ability to relate to the interviewer showed significant correlation with independent ratings of similar behaviors by parent, nursery school teacher, and clinic psychologist. The study provides some support for the validity of brief play interviews with preschool children as performed in a clinical setting.
