Abstract

Cryopreservation of sperm and storage for long time in fish has been studied for aquculture species and species of stock’s is currently threatened. Reasons of study on cryopreservation are: to decrease costs associated with keeping live male broodstock, for keeping at conservation of threate species and also using for fertilization of individuals which have good gametes all year. Environmental pressures, such as water pollution, dam construction and develeopment of adjacent watersheds for irrigation proposes, which have been responsible for the loss of spawning grounds, has declined populations of sturgeon and their diversty is currently threatened due to human influences. As a result of these declines, all sturgeon species worldwide were included in Appendix II of the Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) regulations on 1 April 1998. Sperm of 8 species of sturgeon are successfully cryopreserved in the world. In this review, we have provided overview of cryopreservation method, commonly used of cryoprotectans and extenders for sturgeon, freezing-thawing prodecure and fertilizing with cropreserved sperm.
