Abstract

BP and other operators have been exploring for hydrocarbons in the Papuan Fold Belt for 70 years. From the earliest ventures it was evident that the broad, elevated surface anticlines were indicative of similar structures at depth. Geologic field‐work confirmed the surface structures and allowed cross‐sections of the subsurface to be generated by extrapolation to depth. This approach has become the paradigm for exploration in the fold belt. It has allowed exploratory drilling to proceed with some significant success.
