Abstract

Security breaches are reaching crisis levels – 93% of large UK organisations were breached in the past 12 months and 87% of small businesses. Meanwhile, a tough new EU law will make the reporting of data breaches mandatory and threatens those who fail to report with serious fines. Yet reporting a data breach can cause massive reputational and brand damage. How should you best protect your organisation from data breaches? And how should you react if, or when, you are breached. Tim Ring investigates. The business world was stunned recently when cyber-espionage group APT1 was revealed by US consultancy Mandiant to be almost certainly Unit Number 61398 of the Chinese People's Liberation Army – and responsible for systematically stealing hundreds of terabytes of data from over 140 organisations across the English-speaking world.
