Abstract
The coding scheme suggested in this article is designed to indicate in a simple way certain types of non-tree structures in source descriptions in string indexing systems. The scheme deals with parallel, alternate, or coordinate sequences of terms and connectives by listing them all, one after another, separated by semicolons, and bracketing the list. The possibility of nesting bracketed expressions makes the scheme relatively powerful as well as relatively simple. © 1986 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
