Abstract

This chapter explores developments in the analytic field of David, a 13-year-old boy, and regarding the male bodies. He became curious about the body and he also feared unexpected discoveries about his masculine development. David came into treatment after being hospitalized and diagnosed with juvenile onset diabetes. He was in a state of shock, as he took in a foreign and upsetting daily routine of insulin injections and glucose monitoring. It took some time for his blood sugar to normalize. As he gradually came out of this state, David became fascinated by horror films, which offered him an outlet to express his own personal horror over what had happened to his body. On the cusp of puberty, bodily transformations took on terrorizing meanings for him. For David, the primary existential threat came from inside him, and his fascination with horror, gore, and violent films seemed to express his helplessness and rage about what had happened to him.
