Abstract

SummaryA limited biochemical investigation of the polyphenols precipitated by lead acetate and present in extracts of Coprosma robusta, C. propinqua var. lattuscula, C. propinqua var. propinqua and interspecific hybrids of these has suggested that:(1) C. propinqua var. latiuscula may have arisen by repeated back crossings of C. propinqua on hybrids of an original C. robusta × C. propinqua var. propinqua swarm.(2) Rapid, quantitative analysis of polyphenols, without the identification of components, could prove a great help in the study of hybridization, introgression, species relationships and phylogeny in the genus Coprosma.
