Abstract
A number of publications have been written about the boll weevil due to its significant economic impact on cotton production. Two excellent bibliographies, Dunn (1964) and Mitlin and Mitlin (1968), cover the boll weevil literature from 1843 through 1960, and 1961 through 1965, respectively. Since then many more articles have been published, especially in the area of host plant resistance. Increased emphasis on host plant resistance is due to a natural evolution in pest management, increased funding for this type of research, and the development of the USDA-ARS regional projects: S-59 “Ecology and Management of Heliothis spp. on Cotton, Corn, Soybean and Other Host Plants;” S-102 “An Integrated System for Suppression of the Boll Weevil;” and S-105 “Host Plant Resistance in Cotton to Insects, Mites, Nematodes, and Diseases.” Theseprojects have encouraged cooperative research, and exchange of ideas and data.
