Abstract

In deregulated power system, Independent System Operator (ISO) maintain sufficient reserve requirement in order to reach the consistent operation. In this paper, Security Constrained Unit Commitment (SCUC) in a power system executes ISO using Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) and Benders Decomposition (BD) approach in thermal generating units. A new objective function is formulated to minimize production cost of generating units and value of the loss of load (VOLL) cost considering load shedding at each bus. The BD splits the entire program into mixed integer master program and network security check sub-problem. It performs direct current optimal power flow (DCOPF) in network security check evaluation with line and generator outage contingency. This approach drastically improves the computational efficiency in practical power system. The numerical case studies are investigated in detail using a modified IEEE 30-bus system.
