Abstract

The habituation rates of domestic ducks and wild mallard were compared when a stuffed hen was placed in their home pens. Under two experimental situations the domestic ducks habituated significantly faster than the mallards and some pecked the model. When given novel food in a normal container or novel container the domestic ducks again habituated faster than the mallards. In tests involving escape from a human handler, mallards ran away significantly faster than domestic ducks, but in both varieties young birds escaped faster than older birds.
