Abstract
A man with a 9-yr history of sleepwalking had prepared to fire a shotgun at “burglars” during his most recent sleepwalking episode. Apparently, this was related to anxiety because of an upcoming bar examination. The use of a loud, aversive whistle by his wife each time he began sleepwalking resulted in cessation of the sleepwalking in 3 weeks. Systematic desensitization using a seven-item hierarchy was employed for 10 sessions (5 weeks) to deal with the test anxiety. Follow-up at 1 yr indicated that recovery had persisted, with no symptom substitution.
