(University of Sydney) has just cornpleted a 17-year odyssey studying every one of Australia's 11011 beaches around its vast, largely untouched coast. The survey cov? ered all physical aspects, including the composition of the sand, the seafloor, geomorphology, dune for? mation, public access, and facilities. The research was commissioned in 1987 by Surf Life Saving Australia, to provide a safety inventory, but the database is proving an invaluable sci? entific resource as well.
