Abstract

This paper presents a battery powered switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive constructed using two three-phase intelligent power modules (IPMs). It possesses integrated driving and charging capabilities. In driving mode, five legs of the two IPMs are used to form the SRM modified Miller converter, and the front-end DC/DC boost converter is constructed by the remaining leg. Proper current and speed controls are made to yield satisfactory motor driving performance. The DC-link voltage boosting and commutation advanced shift are further applied to improve the driving performance under higher speeds. In charging mode, some power devices of the SRM converter and motor windings are arranged to form a buck-boost switchmode rectifier (SMR) for charging the battery from utility with good power quality. All constituted circuit components of the charger are placed on-board, only the insertion of utility source is needed.
