Abstract

The present paper deals with the investigation on the stability of stockless anchors. Forces and moments acting on the fluke were measured, and on the basis of these experimental results, empirical formulas for these six components are proposed.Instability phenomena caused by lifting-up of the flukes and turning around the shank are analyzed on the basis of the above formulas by considering three-dimensional effects of soil. As the results, stability conditions for anchors are proposed, and it is shown as an example that stable anchors without stabilizer fins can be realized. Model anchor-tests were conducted, and the results are in accordance with the stability conditions proposed. Though experiments in this paper were performed with dry-loose-sand, instability phenomena of anchors are essentially the same as those with wet-dense-sand and mud. Further investigation of stability conditions along this line of thought must be effective for developing stable anchors for any kind of sea floor.
