Abstract

The preparation of standard gas bags containing known volumes of toxicant and diluting gas is commonly used for the calibration of analytical instrumentation in inhalation toxicology. When the toxicant is a gas, the volume to volume calculations are readily m ade. However, liquid toxicants require mathematical conversion from the liquid to the gaseous state, taking into account the volume of liquid used, its purity, and the effects of temperature and atmospheric pressure on the calculation of the final volume of the toxicant. The Microsoft Visual Basic program described herein accounts for all of these parameters and allows for fast, accurate computations of any one of the parameters-total volume of gas in the standard bag, parts per million of toxicant in the standard bag, microliters of toxicant required-given the other two. Since it is a menu-driven program, changes can be readily made to the input param eters and updated values can be rapidly calculated. The program makes ''what if''types of calculati...
