Abstract

During a 4‐month period beginning July 25, 1989, the Sun released an unprecedented barrage of seven relativistic solar particle events detectable with ground‐based instrumentation. These “ground level enhancements” (GLE) are the first to occur in the present sunspot cycle, and they include the largest event observed since 1956. The seven new events bring to 44 the number of GLE observed since systematic observations began 50 years ago. Several events are distinguished by unusual fine structure in their time profiles, and one event exhibits an extraordinary spike‐like feature at event onset.
