Abstract

Bacillus cereus phage Bace-11 has an isometric head and a contractile tail of about 500 nm in length, and is one of the two largest bacterial viruses known. Its tail, characterized by three long, whiplike fibers, is identical to giant phage tails produced by a Clostridium strain. These particles may represent phages of ancient origin that arose before the divergence of Clostridia and bacilli.Key words: Bacillus, bacteriophages, evolution.
