Abstract

Regarding the concept of family stability, actual paradigm has changed in the last decades: the financial stability is reached belatedly; childbirth is usually postponed; and the time spent by children in educational institutions tends to be longer. This reality sparked a keen interest in understanding the influence of two essential factors in the child's life: family and institution. Based on a qualitative methodology, this study was intended to understand whether families of children in a kindergarten institution are aware of the time they actually devote to children in their household and whether the possible absence can be compensated through of material goods. The results indicated that families are aware that family absence has increased in recent times. Furthermore, on average, these families devote about ninety minutes a day to children, but often the time they spend with them is not always representative of an active involvement between family and children.
