Abstract

We put forward a discussion on the general context and features of the development of the modern Law of the Sea regarding the widening of sovereign rights over the sea and seabed related to the changes and developments of economic appropriation of the ocean and naval warfare. We present the legal framework of rights of coastal and flag states over the sea space and resources. The Blue Amazon discourse is viewed not as a tool for analysis, but as a propagandistic construction to promote the awareness of public opinion as regards the need of public policies for building and keeping sovereign control over the Brazilian exclusive economic zone and continental shelf
