Abstract

A 7–9 GHz UWB radar sensor module using single chip radar CMOS IC and on-board UWB antenna is presented. To reduce the size and power consumption, a single chip CMOS UWB radar IC is implemented. For the reliable and low power radar, the envelope detection architecture is used at the expense of short detection range. The equivalent time sampling technique is adopted for UWB radar IC, employing delay locked loop and digitally synthesized impulse generator with 0.5 ns resolution. On-board $2\times 2$ patch antenna is embedded on radar board. The center frequency and bandwidth can be tuned and the human target detection range is up to 6.3 m. The chip size is $\mathbf{2.8 mm\times 2} \mathbf{mm}$, and current consumption is 122 mA at 1.2 V supply.
