Abstract

A 61 cm double-focussing magnetic mass spectrometer has been constructed incorporating three Faraday cups for simultaneous ion collection and a thermal ionization ion source. The operating characteristics of the mass spectrometer have been investigated using Mg beams. The isotopic composition of Mg in chemically purified samples as well as in individual single crystals has been measured. The present instrument has achieved a precision superior to conventional instruments, with significantly reduced analysis times.
