Abstract
A 44-year-old white woman was seen in May, 1996, complaining of diarrhoea for 6 months and recent onset of double vision. General and neurological examination was unremarkable, except she could not move her left eye outwards. She was extensively investigated to find the cause of her chronic diarrhoea. Abdominal ultrasonography, proctosigmoidoscopy, small and large bowel contrast radiography, and tests for faecal occult blood were all normal. Stool examination for parasites and yeasts, bacterial cultures, and Sudan stain for fat were negative.
