Abstract

Abstract A 40-cm UV(2000 A) telescope equipped with an image intensifier plus film was designed to be flown on a stabilized balloon-borne gondola. Two versions of the optics are available (f/3.8 and f/2.6) to provide a 1.5 or 2.3 deg f.o.v. respectively to fit the program of observation at best. The in-flight angular resolutions are 12 and 20 arcsec FWHI respectively. Five flights totaling ∼10 hours exposure time have provided nominal quality observations in different astronomical fields as the light distributions and contents of galactic globular clusters (M3, M5, M13, M92), the star formation rates as traced by the intermediate mass stars in resolved galaxies (M31, M33, M51, M81, M101, NGC4258) or in clusters of galaxies (A1367, A2111, Coma, Virgo, Cancer), and counts in low extinction regions (SA 57, SA28 and others). Results and current work are reviewed.
