Abstract

A 39-year-old Chinese male staff sergeant in the Navy was referred for the evaluation oí increasing effort dyspnea over a 5-year period. He could not perform satisfactorily during the frequent exercise drills required by the Navy and had failed his recent physical fitness test. There was no history of chronic cough, sputum production, or wheeze. He had not experienced fever, weight loss, or chest pain. He had smoked 15 cigarettes per day for >20 years. There was no history of alcohol or substance abuse.
