Abstract

This paper presents a model for 2D simulation of silicon optical PN phase shifter which can be used for design, optimization, and parametric study of the phase shifter. The model uses the effective index method for modal analysis and takes into account the 2D depletion width across the waveguide to model the PN junction diode. The developed 2D model shows good agreement with numerical TCAD simulation. The model accurately simulates a PN optical phase shifter with variable input parameters viz. wavelength, waveguide dimensions, doping concentrations, PN junction offset, and calculates the phase shift, modulation efficiency, absorption loss, and insertion loss.
