Abstract

A 2-GHz optical receiver consisting of a Ge avalanche photodiode and a four-stage bipolar transistor amplifier is described. Commercially available components are used. Characterization and optimization of the optical receiver were carried out by computer simulation. Responsivity, noise equivalent power, and group delay were measured up to 2.3 GHz.
