Abstract
1H, 13C and 15N data are reported for 4-nitro-bis(dimenthylamino)naphthalene (DMAN) 1 and its protonated form 2. The results obtained reveal the presence of an unsymmetrical [N–H–N] + structure for 2. Both the nitrogen shielding data and the observation of two values of 1J( 15N– 1H) and 3J( 1H– 1H) in the approximate ratio of 1:2 show that the bridging proton has a greater preference for N(8) than for N(1). © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
