Abstract

A Medical Device Radio Communications Service (MedRadio) band 401–457 MHz compliant low power multichannel transmitter is presented in this paper. The transmitter utilizes all the bandwidths as per regulations, and is intended for. The transmitter consists of a multichannel Phase Locked Loop(PLL) with rail to rail quadrature output, a passive mixer and a power amplifier (PA). The power consumption of the transmitter is 460 μW at 1.2 V, and consumes only 0.2 nJ of energy for every bit transmitted in medical micropower networks (MMNs). The overall global efficiency of the transmitter is 13.9 %. The proposed transmitter not only covers MMNs but also the medical implantable device communication service (MICS) band of 402–405 MHz. The transmitter meets all the federal communications commission (FCC) requirements for the MedRadio band. The transmitter design was implemented in a 180 nm CMOS process.
