Abstract
Introduction: It is increasingly recognized that exposure to air pollution is associated with adverse health effects can cause changes in the respiratory system, cardiovascular and reproductive life and fertility, health pregnancy and fetal development. Exposure to air pollution can affect placental morphology, function and mass in mice. Studies in animal and human pregnancy have shown hat fetal growth is accompanied by changes in placenta functional morphology . Objectives: To evaluate the consequences of exposure to air pollution during the pre-gestational or gestational period in Wistar rats placentas. Methods: Female Wistar rats were exposed to filtrated (F) or polluted (P) air in a concentrator of atmospheric particles during 3 weeks before the pregnancy. At 12 weeks of age, the female rats were mated with adult males and were divided in four subgroups exposed to filtrated (F) or polluted (P) air during the pregnancy. At the 19th day of pregnancy, the animals were euthanized and placentas and blood were collected. Total Placenta (Pl+Dc), Placenta (Pl) and Deciduous (Dc) mass were measured. The blood was centrifuged and ACE activity was evaluated. Results: (mean ± SEM – p < 0,05): Pl+Dc mass was higher in FF (0,6399 ± 0,01) and FP (0,6116 ± 0,009) than PF (0,5780 ± 0,01) and PP (0,5591 ± 0,007). Pl mass was higher in FF (0,4280 ± 0,006), FP (0,4404 ± 0,006) and PP (0,4340 ± 0,004) than PF (0,4060 ± 0,005). Dc mass was higher in FP (0,1470 ± 0,008) than PF (0,1229 ± 0,005) and PP (0,1223 ± 0,007). ACE activity was higher in FF (33.50 ± 1,385) than PP (26.53 ± 1,064). Conclusions: Exposure to air pollution before and during pregnancy causes low total placental and deciduous weight. Supported by FAPESP and CNPq.
