In 1993 PAQUES B.V. and Hoogovens Technical Services, started a cooperation which resulted in a joint venture called {open_quotes}Biostar Development{close_quotes}. Hoogovens Technical Services is market leader in Europe (The Netherlands, France, Czech Republic and Poland) for SO{sub 2} removal from flue gases of coal fired power stations. It also supplies engineering, contracting and consulting services on a world wide basis. Hoogovens Technical Services is headquartered in IJmuiden - The Netherlands and has subsidiary offices in the USA, Canada, Brazil and India. PAQUES B.V. is specialized in biotechnological environmental technologies and is worldwide market leader in anaerobic waste water treatment. PAQUES B.V. is headquartered in Balk - The Netherlands and has subsidiary offices in the USA and Taiwan. In the period 1989-1992 a fortunate synergy occurred in the field of biotechnology for gas cleaning. Biotechnological research (Agricultural University Wageningen - The Netherlands) directed to find new micro-organisms and bio processes to make useful products, revealed new ways and biotechnological mechanisms to extract sulfur components from waste water, while producing elemental sulfur.
