Abstract

In the Netherlands, oxygen-blown entrained-flow gasification has been selected as the most promising technology for large scale coal-based power generation, with the world`s first fully Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) demonstration plant currently in operation in Buggenum (Demkolec-plant, 250 Mwe). This paper is focused on slagging-related mineral matter transformations. From experiments at atmospheric pressure using different (mineral-enriched) coal fractions, the mechanism of the formation of slags under entrained-flow gasification conditions is explored. The mineral matter transformations are characterized both in the entrained-flow phase before deposition, and after deposition of the particles onto ceramic plates simulating the gasifier wall. In addition, results of preliminary experiments at elevated pressure are presented.
