Abstract

The gasification power plant produces fuel gas from coal and other feed stocks such as biomass or wood. As the gasification process involves heterogeneous gas-solid chemical reaction, with a transfer of heat and mass, it is important to develop a technology for preparation of a slurry feed which give rise to an economic and efficiency production of fuel gas. The present paper describes the results obtained by ENEL- CRTN in the preparation of the coal water slurry gasifier feed stocks for a pilot plant. The aim of the research was to give quantitatively information for the production of coal water mixture (CWM) with a particle distribution as suggested by EPRI. This is the particle size distribution shown representing the cumulative weight fraction below size versus size. This distribution has a top size of 450 micron and a maximum theoretical packing of about 90%. The solid loading for CWM was a national coal, from Sulcis, Sardinia; it is characterized by a HGI=69 and an heat content of 5700 kcal/kg.
